Essar Steel Minnesota, LLC

http://www.minnesotasteel.com

Essar Steel Minnesota, LLC, owned by Essar Steel Holdings Limited Group, is a fully-integrated onsite, mining through steelmaking facility to be built near Nashwauk. The project includes an open pit mine, iron ore concentrate, pellet, direct-reduced iron plants and a steel slab production facility. It is designed to produce up to 2.5 million tons of steel annually.

With all of the processes at one site Essar Steel Minnesota, LLC can minimize product movement and maximize energy savings, making it North America’s lowest cost steel producer. With low costs, Essar Steel Minnesota, LLC will be well positioned to capitalize on strong market demand within the United States for steel products. It is currently Minnesota’s largest industrial project. Permits for the project are approved.

Development will create hundreds of new mining, processing and support jobs, ancillary businesses, a significant number of spin-off jobs, and result in millions of dollars of new taxes paid that would benefit local communities and the state.

The project will be built near the former Butler Taconite, a taconite plant west of Nashwauk that operated from 1967 to 1985.

Capital cost:$1.65 billion
Estimated permanent employment:500 in 2012
Construction workers: 2,000
