Mesaba Energy Project

Excelsior Energy plans to license, construct, own and operate an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle electric power generating station near Taconite.

The project is aimed at addressing the need for baseload power generation, protecting the environment, putting Minnesotans to work, improving trade balances, minimizing dependence on energy imports, and using coal, a secure, abundant domestic natural resource.

The plant will be cleaner than any existing coal-fired electrical generation plant, provide more stable pricing than natural gas-fired plants, and be more reliable than wind, says Excelsior Energy. An optional site is located near Hoyt Lakes.

Capital cost:$2 billion
Estimated permanent employment:100 plus
Construction workers: 1,500 at peak
